November 21 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
“Gallery View” is a reflection on the shared experience of working with other musicians through Zoom and navigating the return to performing live.
Concertmaster Julian Nguyen, who leads this program with the MusicaNova Chamber Players, “found it fascinating attending studio classes/performances on Zoom and putting it in gallery mode. It was interesting watching the performer and all of the attendees up close with the camera pointed directly at their faces, in contrast to a typical performance where the audience is looking at one performer.”
This concert will feature musicians in solo, chamber and orchestral configurations.
The program will open with solo works learned during the quarantine period (or which were special to a musician during that time), but with the full orchestra on stage — a gallery view in real life. Nguyen will perform Jessie Montgomery’s Rhapsody no. 1 for Solo Violin (2014). To bridge the gap between solo isolation and the full orchestra experience, the concert will include Caroline Shaw’s Valencia (2012) for string quartet. The final two works will be with the full chamber orchestra – Joseph Bologne Chevalier de Saint-Georges’s Symphonie Concertante (1775) for two violins and orchestra in Eb major, and Montgomery’s Strum (2012).
